At the She Dances home in Honduras, we believe that forgiveness is essential to the healing process of the young girls who enter into our home carrying more pain and undeserved baggage than anyone should ever have to. We teach that even when we feel someone doesn’t deserve forgiveness we still forgive because it releases us from the spiritual and emotional bondage of the person who caused the bitterness, fear, and pain in our life. With this approach, we’ve seen young girls who in the past have been treated as commodities, constantly manipulated, and abused sexually, emotionally, verbally, and physically step into a place of allowing themselves to be fully restored. Even to the point of an 11 year old girl, who lived in a brothel without seeing the light of day for three years, asking for prayers for her parents who abused her at a young age and sold her. It’s truly amazing to see the almost immediate effects of a young girl understanding forgiveness. But what is even more truly amazing is where this powerful forgiveness comes from. It comes from a place much deeper than a therapy session or a well equipped curriculum, although those things are important. It comes from a personal encounter with the ultimate healer and the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. For our young girls, when they found Jesus, they found forgiveness, and when the found forgiveness, they found healing, and when they found healing, they found freedom. It’s not often that we blog about our faith in Jesus, but on this day, for this blog, it’s just simply the truth, and it’s as real as we can get.
